Since I love vintage jewelry- I know that not every piece I buy at an thrift store, estate sale, or on eBay will be clean and ready to wear. In fact I am willing to dig through a little bit of muck to find that rare wonderful vintage piece. Recently, I bought a lot of jewelry on eBay that was so foul and wreaked of smoke so bad I almost barfed. Seriously, it was gross and the worse part was the seller did not disclose the smell or condition. Fortunately, with a little cleaning I was able to salvage a few nice pieces from the lot from heck- for my own collection and for resale.
But what of the smoke smell? I don’t want to pass that on to unwitting customers if I can’t help it. To combat the odor, I have been placing new, unused dryer sheets in with these foul smelling but cleaned up looking lots and it has made a difference. I just tear a sheet off, stick it in with the jewelry in whatever closed container it is being stored in, and just to err on the side of caution ~ I make sure the dryer sheet does not touch the jewelry. So far so good, the smoke smell in general gets eradicated and the jewelry smells somewhat of fresh laundry, instead of grandma’s musty boudoir.
