If you get up in the morning wondering if either you need to go back to therapy or are maybe just a little EMO- then Everybody Hurts : An Essential Guide to EMO Culture by Leslie Simon & Trevor Kelley is for you. I found this book tucked in the back of the Self Help/Therapy section of Goodwill- and I had to buy it. See I have some burning questions about myself that I don’t want anyone to know about but need answers to…
Like is it okay for me to still listen to Morrissey now that I am almost pushing 40?
Is my thrift store fashion really just me dressing EMO in disguise?
What does it mean that I fantasize about Jer wearing eyeliner and a kilt while mowing my lawn…
Ok- so basically this book only answered the Morrissey question. I still don’t know if I am EMO or an immature 36 year old who avoids the reality of the real world by hanging out in thrift stores and working on eBay as opposed to a real job. However, the book was a pretty entertaining and fast (which is good) read- I mean who knew Edward Scissorhands was an EMO movie. Ummmm vintage Johnny Depp…
Not only was the book entertaining- there was even a helpful section in the guide on How To EMO-fy Your Blog Post (s). Which I don’t think a lot of bloggers need help with this one. Stop crying and posting about your significant other (you know I am talking about you). We are tired of hearing about how sorry your life is and the music on your blog is killing us, except for the Coldplay tracks.
By the way- if you read this blog post and don’t know what EMO is don’t ask me either, I am still trying to find out if I need therapy.
Before you leave I offer you this Morrissey & Siouxie video to get you in the mood for some EMO lovin’- enjoy and please don’t cry while doing the deed because that would be so uncool.

Eyeliner and a kilt? That’s just creepy…
You mean in a sexy sort of Addams Family “creepy” kind of way- right Gomez?
Okay, um, what?
S0 there is nothing even remotely EMO about you – right Dan?
Didn’t you admit to a crush on Debbie Gibson on your blog- that was either an EMO or EWWWW moment?
I always get a bit stuck on what EMO actually means. I hear it, and I get an image: I can imagine your typical EMO kid… but try to define it, and I get totally lost. Maybe this book would help me!
And on a different note… I’m very sorry if Dave offended you in his comments on my neighbours post. This is a passionate issue in our house at the moment; I hope we haven’t put you off coming back. I don’t think he meant to imply what it sounded like he did; he’s honestly not at all judgemental in real life.
I am definitely not an emeaux. That’s one weird counter culture Michelle…haha! I had a crush on Debbie Gibson and am currently president of the Debbie Gibson Worship Society…Oh Debbie
Hi Bobby- I am not EMO either- most of this post is tongue and cheek… I didn’t read the book word for word, I skimmed it and looked it over the topics and pictures as I do when I read comic books with the kids. It was actually quite funny. I really bought the book for my 15 year old to look at , he throws the term EMO around quite a bit and his “girl” friend (I don’t think they are actually an item) painted his toes and fingernails a dismal color of grey a few months back.
I like how you termed it “weird counter culture” – I think it’s just a fun term or generalization… & although I still listen to MOZ – I don’t think I am EMO. I despise emotionalism in real life.
What is with all the Debbie Gibson worshipers? I may have to post about that… nah.
Just to let you know that Dave has apologised… he was writing in a rush at work and he did not think very carefully about his phrasing. I’m used to this – I live with it!
S0 there is nothing even remotely EMO about you – right Dan?
I’m still not exactly sure what EMO is. Isn’t it a type of music? And apparently combing your hair to cover one side of your face or something?
Didn’t you admit to a crush on Debbie Gibson on your blog…
I don’t think I ever admitted to that. Can you find such a post? I doubt it!
…painted his toes and fingernails a dismal color of grey a few months back.
So is Emo some variant on Goth?
What is with all the Debbie Gibson worshipers? I may have to post about that… nah.
Good, ’cause vintage 80′s is all mine. BTW, these days it’s Deborah. Deborah Gibson. It’s not Debbie anymore.
