My wife once got a big box of books that were packaged with a huge amount of old newspaper. The cool thing about it was that the paper dated back to the 1990s (the new vintage).

That’s awesome! When I was younger and used to burn Kool-Aid, Hamburger Helper was a great thing. Then, I started reading labels and getting a few more skilz under my belt in the kitchen and I haven’t bought the stuff in YEARS! I’m surprised that it didn’t need to be wrapped in paper or something. Maybe the label made the difference.

Well, there you go, that wasn’t what I expected at all! Why is it called hamburger helper if it has nothing to do with burgers though?

When I was a student, I lived with a girl from Milwaukie. Every time she went home, she brought us some kind of food that we don’t have over here to try; hamburger helper didn’t make it over though. And I was a bit disturbed by macaroni and cheese in a box!

Jenny- you don’t make either with it. What you do with it is, is fry up some crumbled up ground beef in a pan, then when it is cooked you pour in water, their packet of flavor, and then either their package of rice or pasta (usually pasta- but now they have a few flavors with rice). Then you let it simmer down and what you have is sauce, pasta, and ground beef. It’s generally a rip off- because you can do it yourself for cheaper add seasoning and mix with cooked pasta- same thing. Too there is not enough to feed a big family. I buy the Mexican style once in awhile when I can get on sale a dollar a box. Then I throw so much stuff on it and in it- that it does not even remotely resemble Hamburger Helper when I am done. They have tuna and chicken helper too. The tuna Helper sounds disgusting… I don’t like canned tuna as a hot dish. There you have it- that’s Hamburger Helper in a nut shell. It’s as American as apple pie!

What is lasagna flavour hamburger helper? It sounds very wrong… and do you make burgers with it or lasagna? I don’t think we have any such delicacy over here…

You know I was actually kind of surprised when it showed up myself- I thought one had to mark up all the writing on the outside. They have posters at our post office that direct people to magic marker off all the writing and pictures on the outside of their boxes, especially liquor and bottle boxes. Perhaps this Hamburger Helper box is special-maybe I should have the box bronzed… but I already threw it out after I clipped off the Box Top for Education 10 cents label.
