It’s a sad fact that I have never, ever seen the movie E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. When I was a child this was an incredibly sore spot for me. You see all the children in my neighborhood had seen it… except me. When the movie came out in 1982, movies took forever to come to television and or be released to the home video market. In fact, I am not even sure we had a vcr then and if we did, I don’t think my parents would have made it a priority to buy the E.T. movie for me.
For some reason or another, all the children who had seen E.T. made it sound like it was the best movie in the world. I don’t know if it is or not, because here it is over 25 years later and I have still not seen it. Although I am still getting razzed for not seeing it. Take this comment left on my last post from Dan Rinnert, who says:
I’ve seen E.T. probably half a dozen times. I also played the Atari video game version at my aunt & uncle’s house long ago. And, I read the book and the sequel. Or maybe I just read the sequel. Not sure. Oh, and I had E.T. collectibles and I even tried to phone E.T., but that didn’t pan out.
So there.
Talk about salt in the wound, after all these years and I still can’t get away from the shame of never watching that dang E.T. movie. The fact is with all these kids around ( my five kids who aren’t interested in watching E.T.), chances are I will never get to see the movie.
However, just when I thought I would spend another twenty five years hiding my shame of not getting to see the popular movies from my childhood- I am about to be vindicated, since I have found this…
I call it Cliffs Notes for E.T.
It is in fact, The E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial as told by Gertie – Read Along Adventure, still sealed and minty fresh from 1982 in it’s plastic packaging. So tonight instead of wasting two hours on the movie version, I will be up to snuff in 1/4th of time. All I have to do is read the 24 page book and dust off my cassette player to listen to the tape.
Now if I can only find the Read Along Adventure’s for The English Patient, Titanic, and whole bunch of other “adult” movies I have never seen and been razzed about.
Until next time- Don’t Forget to Phone Home!
Your Vintage Alien Loving Friend,

That is way cool. But, you DO still need to see the movie!
This would never have happened if you hadn’t robbed me of the Dingbot post!
Oh, and the Titanic? The boat sinks. Sorry to spoil it for you.
As for The English Patient and whatever other “adult” movies you’ve missed, I can’t help you there. I stay away from those X-rated flicks.
ouuuuuuuuutch !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here is one 4 U ………
Spell “I met” slowly using a funny voice
heheheheheheeeeeeeeheheheheheheee
I’m always finding out that I haven’t seen classic films of my childhood… although E.T. is one I never escaped, and I must say I have rather a soft spot for it. There’s loads of stuff people can’t believe I missed though!
Too late Meleah- I know how it ends now.
Dan- didn’t you try to run an x-rated campaign for your rubber stamp business. I believe you posed them on little beds and stuff…
Do I know you Eric? Or are you some sort of alien come over here to harass and probe my readers…
Jenny- I am probably one of the least informed people when it comes to popular culture. If it happened 20 years in the past I am finally up to snuff on it today- anything new though and I am clueless.
E.T. phone home… E.T. borrow quarter for pay phone?
The ad campaign is art!
HI E.T. I love you lots but with this recession going on- afraid I don’t have a quarter for ya! Try calling collect.
Dan- one man’s art is another man’s smut… how you managed to make rubber stamps icky is beyond me! ;0P
