More Vintage Character Sheets – Super Friends from the Seventies

super_hero-6 Besides being hopelessly addicted to vintage jewelry, there is my small addiction to vintage character bedding. It’s not like I had a lot of special bedding when I was a girl… sure I had a Holly Hobbie comforter but that is about the extent of it. Perhaps it is my lack of fancy cartoon bed sheets that makes me giddy when I find vintage character bedding today.

Now thirty some years later and I actually hunt for children’s bedding with cool cartoons on it at my local thrifts. Some of the best sheets I have found include, this Super Friends fitted sheet from 1976, I found last week.

The Super Friends was a Saturday morning cartoon that ran from 1973 to 1986. It is somewhat based on the DC Comic book’s Justice League of America. As a small child I remember getting up early to watch this cartoon. However, it wasn’t until I actually pulled this fitted sheet with Wonder Woman , Aquaman, and Superman on it, off of the store shelf- that I even remembered this television show.

I suppose it’s the great memories I get when I find some old kid’s sheets with cartoons on them, that keep me looking out for more.

Other favorites sheets I have found in thrift stores include:super_hero-2

The A-Team

Jurassic Park

Vintage Peanuts from the 70’s.

Early Pokemon

Early Batman

Vintage Barbies

Rock n’ Wrestling sheets from the early 80’s cartoon show

(I have also found these in curtains)

and perhaps even more sheets that I have forgot about.

When I first started bringing home vintage children’s bedding, I thought my kids would be delighted! However, I soon found out that they couldn’t care less about mom’s new hobby. They had no idea who the A Team was, even though there was a picture of Mr T on the sheets I brought home. They turned their noses up at the wrestling sheets, declaring Hulk Hogan an uncool, dinosaur. Even my husband turned against me and made me take down the wrestling curtains I put up in our bedroom. This was despite the fact that the curtains matched our bedroom walls perfectly.

I know somewhere out there someone appreciates cartoon bed sheets as much as I do and that’s why I keep blogging about my vintage treasure. Until next time!

Your Vintage Wonder Woman,

Michelle

I miss my Bambi sheets. They were sold at my grandmother’s house sale for a quarter.

My mother had bought them for me when I was little, and they were always used on the bed I slept in when we visited my grandmother. They were still in good condition.

My aunt had marked everything, and before my mom even saw and remembered them, someone was paying their quarter and walking out with a deal.

Aside from the sentimental value, a full set of Bambi sheets can go for $25 and on up on eBay.

So, a quarter was a steal. Heck, the woman probably sold them on eBay for 100 times that!

Bambi sheets eh? Those are manly sheets… ;0P

A quarter for sheets no matter what the character is a steal- bedding is expensive even if you buy the cheap stuff at Wal Mart.

I think my aunt just wanted to clear stuff out. A lot of people got some really great deals…

Then, when the sale was over, there was a rush to get everything out of there. There were two lamps, a table and a blender I wanted. My mother, who drove, didn’t want the lamps or table, so I couldn’t convince her to let me put them in the car. And the blender (an old electric blender–I think it was originally my great grandmother’s) was lost in the shuffle–which is a bummer because I’ve never seen one like it on eBay or anywhere else.

Well I think it all boils down to one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Sometimes it’s hard to convince others that something is a really great find.

I couldn’t cope with characters on the bedding when I was little. Or at least, I don’t actually remember having any character bedding, but we did have the characters from some kind of woodland animals story on the wallpaper and that used to drive me crazy. Sometimes I’d be annoyed that the pattern was too repetitive, or I’d get stuck in a loop trying to count badgers, or I’d realise I didn’t like the expression on the mole’s face (all 800 times!), or I’d be irritated that the tree didn’t look realistic… well, that’s how it was whenever I couldn’t sleep anyway! I think bedding would have been a step too far!

OMG! I loved Wonder Woman so much I had Wonder Woman bathing suits, Wonder Woman under-roos, Wonder Woman sheets and I even had the full Wonder Woman costume that I wore all the time. I even slept in it!

    xoxoxo

Jenny- that is a scary story- but I think I have had some sort of experience much like it. I am not sure where because my parents never had wall paper- but I recall being wrapped up by repetitive patterns myself.

HI Meleah- you are Wonder Woman!

  9. Debo Hobo says

Awesome, I’m not sure I would put the sheets up in my room though..LOL:)

Actually Deborah- once we moved to the downstairs bedroom, I had it painted a nice warm Autumn color to match the hard wood floors and character sheets and curtains no longer match. Thanks for dropping by.

Thanks for linking to that A-Team post. Reading the comments reminded me I’m still upset with you for stealing my Dingbot post.

  12. Maureen says

Ha! I have done the same! I have sheets from Star Wars and Jedi, as well as ET.

I wrapped my ET stuffie in that last one ;)

    Glad to have found you!

  13. Michelle Gartner says

Dan – you are a Dingbot!

Hi Maureen thanks for dropping by… ET is a sad memory for me. When I was a kid, I was the only kid I knew that did not get to see ET. Back in the day, there were no dvd releases in a few months and movies did not get televised until at least 7 years after they played in the movie theater. I remember carrying a sore spot for years over the ET thing. Come to think of it, I still haven’t seen ET.

PS the dog you have – if it is Fisher Price, I believe he is called “Snoopy.” Although he looks nothing like the Peanuts version of Snoopy.

I’ve seen E.T. probably half a dozen times. I also played the Atari video game version at my aunt & uncle’s house long ago. And, I read the book and the sequel. Or maybe I just read the sequel. Not sure. Oh, and I had E.T. collectibles and I even tried to phone E.T., but that didn’t pan out.

    So there.

hi, I was wondering if you would be interested in selling your wonder woman sheet. My 4 year old daughter is obsessed with wonder woman and we are trying to find bedding with her on it .
    Thanks

  17. Michelle says

Hi Shannon- I would love to sell them- but unfortunately these sheets received a lot of interest and so I listed them on eBay… needless to say they have been sold. I thank you for your interest and for stopping by. -Michelle
