Vintage Toaster Bacon & High School Wrestling

It’s after the holidays and I thought I would have a little more time to work on the two blogs I am sticking with in the New Years. Vintage Jewelry Pictures has still not been moved off of blogger as of yet. As for this blog- I am still only getting one or two posts in a week. The culprit that keeps me away from posting is winter sports. My two oldest children are both involved in Winter sports. My oldest wrestles in high school and my middle school aged son plays basketball.

The basketball is not too much of a time constraint at least for me. Typically my son plays one game on Saturday and it lasts about 40 minutes. Wrestling on the other hand is taking up a lot of my time. Just this Thursday I drove over 130 miles to a meet only to find out my son was receiving a win by forfeit. The other team either did not have a 119 pounder or their 119 pounder did not make weight. I did manage to resist the urge to curse because really it’s not the end of the world…

On Saturday- I spent almost seven hours watching tournament wrestling and it happened that I arrived there almost 3 hours after the event started. Wrestling is taking up a lot of time… and this weekend while at the tournament I either lost all my cash or someone took it out of my purse in the bleachers. It wasn’t the end of the world but I didn’t get to eat. Which made me cranky and yell louder. What I really needed was some of this toaster bacon from 1972. I could have toasted a whole box of it and then stuffed it my purse. Then I would have had something to eat or on the off chance someone was riffling through my purse, I would have caught them greasy handed.

I tried to find more information on Reddi Bacon Real Bacon That Cooks in Your Toaster online or even a video on You Tube, but I reached a dead end. Does anyone remember this stuff? It sounds like pure genius to me! I have to wonder what happened to make toaster bacon discontined. Lots of toaster fires? It couldn’t have been lack of interest… I know like a gazillion people who would be into toaster bacon.

Reddi Bacon is a mystery but I can tell you what happened this weekend at the wrestling tournament. My son placed fourth out of 16 teams in the 119 class and received his first varsity wrestling medal.

I think Toaster Bacon was replaced by microwave bacon. From what I understand, it’s already cooked and just gets reheated in the microwave.

Yay for your son. That is an awesome placement. Congrats to him on his medal! Also, I have to say I love his hat and his striped hoodie. He would be tough to lose in a crowd and that’s a GOOD thing. :)

Hi Michelle! They took it off the market because it filled the toasters with grease and burned several people’s homes to the ground–settled out of court for an undisclosed sum thus ending the product. Luckily for me, I don’t eat pork of any kind.

    Congrats to your son!

Hi Teeni- already cooked bacon is yucky unless it’s on salad.

Augghhh- the bumble bee outfit, that’s his girlfriend’s hoodie and it all raggedy looking. He has a black wrestling hoodie like the rest of the team that’s intimidating, but she has it. I have nothing against her- I just hate her raggedy tore up bumble bee hoodie and want my sons gear back. But I don’t push it kids are kids- I mean it could have been worse she could be wearing his underwear around town- then I would have to throw down.

Hi Bobby- I can’t believe I googled it wrong. According to CNN – the product was scrapped before they went national with it. I bet the did have local test markets though and the grease fires make sense.

There were actually a lot of funny discontinued food items in the cnn article like coffee flavored jello and flower flavored pez. You may not do pork- but I don’t consume jello ever at all…. it freaks me out to eat fruit flavored animal glue.

    Congrats to your son!!!! Yeah!!!!

I never heard of this Toaster bacon of course I was not old enough to be concerned about anything in the kitchen. Plus we didn’t eat too much processed food either. Well that’s not true because we sure did eat a butt load of Spam….

  5. Michelle Gartner says

Did you just write “butt load of spam” on my blog….?

LOL Now I am going to have to find out a way to frequently drop that into casual conversations…..HAR HAR HAR HAR!

Ugh, Wrestling really is a commitment. And I LOVE All Things Bacon!!

  7. Michelle Gartner says

Hi Meleah- Wrestling is a commitment for the boys and that’s the main reason they quit. I drive a lot of them home from meets and they all tell me the love competition and sparing during practice, but they hate the HUGE time commitment.

I love bacon on a lot too- I think it should be it’s own food group.

  8. meleah rebeccah says

bacon, chocolate, cheese and vodka = sustenance

  9. Laura says

Hi Michelle – thanks for stopping by my blog! I’m sure you know by now I thoroughly enjoy reading yours. As for the bacon? I detest bacon, but my husband loves it. If they were to bring it back in the toaster-ready form, we’d be buying it. Of course, I’d make sure hubby didn’t leave the toaster until the bacon was ready. In re: customer service – you are right. Gone is the day when customer service included checking the oil and cleaning the windshield…sigh.

Meleah- on Atlantis the cartoon the cook says beans, bacon, whiskey and lard is the four food groups. I suppose I could live off of whiskey and bacon if I had to but I love fresh veggies and salad and wine. Although I rarely drink.

Laura- how can you detest bacon… lol. One time in my early 20′s I went out with some of my boyfriends college buddies to an ice cream shop and one guy said he hated chocolate- I couldn’t believe it. I thought the guy was insane… Then again I know people who think I am weird for hating beer. I am so happy you enjoy my blog- I try to get around to a lot of blogs and bloggers but it is really hard to keep up with it because I own two businesses and have five kids.

  11. Bobby Revell says

Where oh where is Michelle? I miss you!

  12. Michelle Gartner says

Thanks Bobby- I am just so behind with taxes and then being holed up in wrestling tournaments all weekend! I am hoping to have a little free time again after February. It’s nice to know someone cares- I was feeling kind of burnt out on blogging and bloggers who were running a popularity contest and don’t visit their old friends.

  13. Bobby Revell says

Hey…I’m popular with all 10 of my readers and all 10 blogs I read are popular to me! Popularity means nothing, friends mean everything. I wish your son good luck and I hope he wins every match.Have a great week

I must be the most confused blogger in the world! Big HOOORAYY for your son’s varsity wrestling medal ;-)

    MMM bacon!

    Congratulations to your son!

    Now I’m hungry.

  16. Michelle Gartner says

Hey Eric – thanks for dropping by… and Awake too

I am so tired lately- I lost 3 hours of accounting to a computer glitch yesterday. I am burnt out and discouraged. Ah well- back to the grind.

  17. Eric "Speedcat Hollydale" says

I have been tired lately too … I think winter starts to take it’s toll in my case. Hybernation sounds pretty good ;-)

Hope you have a nice weekend !

  18. Michelle Gartner says

Winter dark and dreary days- tax time and shuttling kids to sports several evenings a week is what’s taking a toll on me. I plan on trying to get all my returns done this weekend- for both businesses and our personal and then all the state ones. Ambitious but I want my free time back.

It’s not exactly the same as fried bacon, but yes, you can do it. Put the bacon between two pieces of tinfoil to keep it from splattering everywhere and ‘bake’ it at 450 or however hot the oven will go. Or if you have a broiler pan you can broil it, but it would be messy.

  23. Michelle says

Thank for the tip and stopping by- I usually make bacon in the microwave and that’s pretty messy as well. It’s too bad that there is no real way to make bacon without a mess. Thanks for dropping by. :)
