Happy New Year to you all. I hope you a great holiday season and a fabulous New Year. It still sort of blows my mind that we are already into the second decade of the new millennium.
For those of you who are really into vintage like I am- that means that “stuff” from the 1990′s is going to start creeping into the realm of vintage. On the online retail site ETSY- vintage items are considered twenty years or older. And on eBay the vintage category encompasses the 1930s through the 1980′s. As this decade starts to tick by however, more and more “things” from the 1990′s will become vintage.
So let’s take a look back at the year 1990. We’ll start with some of the television shows that debuted in 1990.
- Mr. Bean debuted as a television show in 1990. Hooray for Mr. Bean- my children still love watching Rowan Atkinson as the eccentric Mr. Bean. This show spun off into a cartoon series and several popular movies.
- Northern Exposure premiered on CBS in 1990 and lasted until 1995. I watched this show faithfully- following the antics of Dr. Joel Fleischman played by Rob Morrow. A New York city native Dr. Fleischman has to spend four years in Cicely, Alaska as part of his agreement for receiving a med school scholarship. The quirky characters on this show were endearing.
- The Fresh Prince of Bel Air premiered on NBC in 1990 featuring Will Smith. Although Will Smith was a very successful rapper at the time, the show helped catapult Will as the superstar actor we know today in such films as Independence Day, Men in Black and I Am Legend.
- Law & Order premiered on NBC in 1990 and still runs today in it’s twentieth season. Not too many shows can say they have had a twenty year run. The show has been spun off as several other Law and Order branded television shows both here and abroad, as a made for t.v. movie, and as several computer video games.
Lesser known television shows debuting in 1990 include:
- Keeping Up Appearances which debuted on the BBC in 1990. A favorite of mine, this show stars Patricia Rutledge as class conscious Hyacinth Bucket (who pronounces her own name as Bouquet).
- TaleSpin was a Disney cartoon that debuted in 1990 and featured characters straight from the 1967 Disney movie The Jungle Book.
This week I plan on posting on some of the
movies and music of the early 199o’s as well. I hope you stick around for more “vintage” 1990.
Good Luck to You and Yours in the New Year and New Decade. -Michelle
Below is a classic scene from the Mr. Bean television show.

My grandmother liked watching “Keeping Up Appearances.” We thought the show was called “Hyacinth” which made it kind of hard to find for her…
So, now some of my computer stuff is vintage. Actually, computer gear is considered vintage before regular items are, so I guess they’re even more vintage now. Or maybe they can be considered antiques now.
That’s a cute story- my parents used to watch Keeping Up Appearances and then I didn’t care for it. I have watched in the last year on PBS and I think it is really cute. I don’t go out fo my way to see it but when it comes on I’ll watch it.
I think computer stuff is considered vintage every 18 months and antique in 3 to 5 years… but don’t quote me on that.
OMG!!! Northern Exposure was oneof my ALL TIME FAVORITE SHOWS – EVER!
And, I’ve been a die-hard Law & Order fan forever – ESPECIALLY the ones with Jerry Orbach as Detective Lennie Briscoe! *memories*
I had forgotten about Northern Exposure until I wrote this post. I remember watching it all the time- though I was hooked!
I have watched Law a& Order a few times, but generally speaking crime dramas are not my thing.
Thanks for the heads up on Hoarders… cool and wacky.
Ah, the nineties. Looking forward to your look back. Seinfeld and X-Files come to mind, but I think they both debuted in the late 80′s.
And how many Law & Orders and CSI’s are there altogether, like ten? I think they must be having a contest.
Oh, Im glad you are enjoying Hoarders! I warned you it was addictive!
