So the 2010 Winter Olympics are over- football season is done and there are still 3 months of winter left if you live up North. By up North- I mean Wisconsin, Minnesota, the U.P. and of course Canada- the motherland.
I know it’s not all about watching television and staying indoors. Sure there are plenty of outdoor pursuits in the winter- like skiing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing… but you’ve done it all. Nothing to watch on the boob tube and nothing to do but pick icicles out your nose. What to do… what to do.. what to do?
Might I suggest a little game invented by the Canadians that they like to call “crack the whip on skis?”

Any part of you can crack when you play crack-the-whip on skis in Canada.
Oh Quite! I do like a good game where the possibility of cracking “any part” of me exists… it’s like rugby only much, much colder.

You could read that couldn’t you? Poor American devil… I heard the Canadians are trying to enter this as a sport at the 2014 Winter Olympics. I like how they convinced old Maurice it would be easy and of course he thought so himself, being an old fathead skiing buff.

Like I said- poor devil, they stuck Maurice at the end of the rope. There is some irony about being at the end of your rope…

Mercifully they shot him into a snowbank- it could have been worse they could have whipped into a polar bear.

“My friends lifted my aching body and toted me to the Muskoka Sands Inn for a drink of their favorite whisky- and mine-Canadian Club.”
What it doesn’t say is that Maurice was so scared he bought rounds of drinks for “his friends” all night long, lest they get tired of his company and teach him another, less sporting Canadian drinking game.

For those of you who like a slow motion replay- here is Maurice getting shot into a snow bank.

Here’s Maurice’s friends happily hanging out at the Muskoka Sands Inn- showing the proprietor just how they whipped old Maurice off his skis. They’re a happy group! End of story.
Well- if you are like me you can’t wait for winter to end for summer’s sweet pursuits, like fishing or boating on Lake Michigan.

Yeah- this is more my style. I love how jaunty and relaxed he looks… but why did they stop making whiskey bottles that big?

They didn’t. The guy in the picture is just 22″ tall.
I think I’ll stick to curling and its risks of dropping a stone on your foot or back injury
I just love how catchy “crack-the-whip on skis” is!
whiskey = puking festival!
Dan- if the guy was 22″ – he would probably wouldn’t be strong enough to carry a liter of hootch. I know regular sized, middle aged people who struggle to carry a gallon of milk.
Bone- I saw an article on Twitter about the “hot girls” of curling… is that why you suddenly have taken a shine to the monumentally boring sport of curling? It’s all about wrestling in the winter, and chicks wrestle too at least at the high school level. Of course you are too old for high school chicks…. I am just saying.
Hi Jen- I saw the ad and I couldn’t decide if today a whiskey company would shy away from that sort of advertising because of liability or if the ad was run today it would be run “Jackass” style with Ashton Kutcher endorsing it.
Meleah- I agree, I haven’t even smelled whiskey in about 15 years. Actually I rarely drink if ever… it’s just not something that interests me anymore.
I just LOVE these kinds of “retro” ads. Whiskey ads are always so “animated.” Thanks for sharing Michelle.
P.S. Have you ever visited Lidian’s blog, Kitchen Retro? I think you would like it. She posts ads like these with humorous commentary.
Ah yes. Back in the day, when drinking and smoking were ever-so glamorous!
Hey..I haven’t seen you around much (probably cos I haven’t been around much)
