Who is Hulk Hogan? I miss vintage wrestling.

VIntage wrestling sheetAfter the long four day weekend, my two oldest son’s returned to school, leaving me with a mess of mammoth proportions. The two oldest are supposed to clean the dining room area after dinner and also clean the living room before bed. Neither of which had been done for four days…

When they came in the back door after school yesterday, I was waiting for them. First I launched into mom’s general tirade #3- “THERE WILL BE NO NINTENDO UNLESS YOU KEEP THE COMMON AREAS CLEAN!”

Followed by general tirade #1- “YOUR MOMMA IS NOT THE MAID!”

I finished up my rant with- “if you don’t help clean up I will smack down on you two so hard that it would make Hulk Hogan cry.”

My oldest the high school prep wrestler replied, “that’s not to hard to do, Mom he’s old,” lunging at me to put me in an illegal full nelson (illegal in high school wrestling).old Hulk Hogan

As I made my escape and countered with some moves I learned from Moe Howard of the Three Stooges, I heard my twelve year old say quietly and thoughtfully, “who’s Hulk Hogan.”

The room got silent- high school wrestling boy and I looked dumbfounded.

When I was a kid I spent all day Saturday watching wrestling. I watched the WWF (now called the WWE) , the NWA, and all the other smaller televised leagues I could. To say I was obsessed with wrestling would be putting it mildly. Not only did I watch wrestling on television, but I made my mother attend matches with me (she came willingly). Although my mother will deny it- she put the squeeze on Brutus Beefcake’s- beef cakes after a match one time… if you know what I mean.

Macho Man Randy SavageMy parent’s were o.k. with me watching wrestling. It didn’t matter that they wrestled in a cage or whacked each other chairs. The lines were clearly drawn between who was good and bad, and the bad guys always got it in the end (for the most part). It was all so innocent then- despite all the cartoonish violence. Not like today’s wrestling where strip shows are common, women get hit, and the F-bomb or the finger is waved all over the place. Since when is the finger a motto?

I miss the old days of wrestling, and I actually know people older then I- that miss the pre Hulk Hogan days. Maybe it’s all Hulk Hogan’s fault that professional wrestling went even further down the toilet… Nah- It was bound to happen anyway. It’s not the end of the world that my son doesn’t have a clue about professional wrestling, it’s not like he is missing out on a fine art form. It’s just kind of sad that something so fun and cool- has become so trashy.

The pictures of wrestlers are taken from a set of vintage 1991 wrestling sheets my Mom bought me last month… they have since been sold to a guy in France, because I didn’t have a bed to fit them.

Who is your favorite wrestler from the eighties?

I never really liked wrestling. My neighbor was really into it, and he was convinced it was all real.

But, for voting, it’s hard to decide between Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant. Hulk Hogan did (does?) a lot of work with kids (hospitalized kids, I think) so that’s in his favor. But, Andre the Giant was funny in The Princess Bride plus he passed away too early. So, I cast my vote for Andre the Giant.

I loved it. I kinda grew up with a bunch of pro wrestlers so guess I almost had to love it. Hulk Hogan was one of my favorites!

I am a big fan of WWE, but today’s wrestlers are so different from way back when I was a kid.

I almost cried when Hulk Hogan decided to adopt the bad persona…..

Oh man, I loved watching wrestling back in the late 70s/early 80s. This stuff today is really over the top, but it’s still fun to watch occasionally. My wife’s dad was a pro wrestler in Canada waaay back in the day who went up against Andre the Giant before he became mainstream.

    Picture this:

10th grade. first “boyfriend” asks me to go the WWF wrestling at the sports arena. San Diego. Me, him, his dad, his grandfather. 1984? 1985?

I go home and ask my mom. she wants to go, too. I have no idea what professional wrestling is, but like boy so want to go.

They were all there. I had no idea how special it was to see and be in close proximity to Andre the Giant or Hulk Hogan.

I didn’t get it. I more don’t get it today. Sorry. Please don’t hold it against me. I won’t hold it against you, either. *giggle*
