On the First Mundane Monday My True Love Gave to Me; Antique Pork N Beans

March 11, 2008 by Michelle Gartner

Dan of dcrblogs has proposed a new MeME called Mundane Monday and for his inaugural post he presents the Plastic Bag.

I realize it’s Tuesday- but Monday came and went with me nursing a huge nasty chest cold- but I want to play along as well. For my first Mundane Monday I give thee…

Pork n Beans

And not just any can of pork n beans- but in keeping with the vintage theme of this blog I will point out that these are vintage Van Camps beans because they have been “satisfying families since 1861.” So actually they aren’t vintage- because according to the experts anything pre 1920’s is an antique.

Therefore- I give thee antique pork n’ beans… and a quaint little anecdote. When I was a kid in daycare some thirty years ago and they served lunch at this particular day care- when they put out the Pork n Beans, the children put up quite a fuss. This was because we were all fighting for the piece of butter as we called it… which I know now know to be a nasty old piece of pork- hence the “pork” in the name pork n beans. I still laugh to this day wondering what genius convinced us all it was butter. I also prefer to eat baked beans now…

Of course putting a can of pork n beans on my sill and taking a picture might be disturbing to the art purists out there. I know that I have probably upset the notions of Jenny’s boyfriend Dave who is a Found Art purist. So I have put the can back in it’s rightful place in my cupboard amongst the green beans and taken a picture… and give you Pork n Beans as Found. It is available for $100- I take cash or paypal.

Again- I realize other Art enthusiasts will be in a tizzy- after all, I did not do anything to the former picture. That it is the case, that I just snapped a picture of pork n beans in my cupboard and called it something artistic. So for those of you will cry foul of my artistic abilities- I give thee a little something I like to call Andys Pork n Beans. This one too has been made available by the artist- call for the price.

Happy Mundane Monday~ XOXOX Michelle

I am not a found art purist!!!

    I just admire Duchamp.

My favourite artists are Van Gogh, Banksy, Lucian Freud, L.S. Lowry and Anthony Gormley.

I like Jenny better then Jenny’s boyfriend- she likes my artwork and is fun… ;0)

She also writes in an intellectual vein that is stimulating- yet unpretentious.

I retract what I wrote about Jenny’s boyfriend Dave- He is not a found art purist- he is a stick in the mud…
why’d you have to put artists names on my blog- now you know I have to look them up, since I only recognize just two of them. :0)

    Sometimes ignorance is bliss…

Nice photos, and interesting artistic flairs. But, what future archaeologists will be interested is what these Pork ‘n’ Beans were used for. Were they offerings to the Oil Gods to try to bring down the price of gas? Or, were they simply some sort of art expression medium? Do you open them up and create your own organic, recyclable, edible art display from the contents? Enquiring minds will want to know, and hazard dangerously off-the-mark ideas about what their uses were.

    Pork n beans are art
unless you stick cut up hot dogs in them,
    then they become beanie weenies.

Which in that case it is no longer art and becomes fine cuisine. That is for toddlers or pot heads- basically anyone who has uncontrollable munchies.

I think Andy Warhol would be proud. Well, not proud, per se– a little annoyed he hadn’t thought of using VanDeCamps first. But still. Very funny. I should peer into my pantry and see whether I can find some nice antique edibles for dinner tonight. (Sadly, I just MIGHT find some antiques in there– I really need to clean that baby out.)

I almost think I could find an old can of beans like that in my mom’s cabinet. She seems to buy them and never use them.
