Selling on eBay is all about good customer service…

August 18, 2008 by Michelle Gartner

take this seller for example- they went to all the effort to make sure they had a good dinner of Lasagna flavored Hamburger Helper before they shipped my lot of Mr. Bean cartoon videos.

I really appreciate how they made sure there were no bits of dry pasta left in the box or lasagna flavored powder residue, before they packed up my dvds.

Last year- I went to a church rummage that was run by ancient elderly people. While there I bought so many cases of vintage Christmas ornaments that I needed a large cardboard box to carry them out to my van in one trip. Needless to say a lovely cashier working the sale helped me pack them all carefully into a huge cardboard box that had large, bold lettering on the side that read “case of adult diapers.” I felt fortunate to score such a great box since shipping materials are costly and I thought it would make the perfect box to ship a lot of maternity clothes to some chick in New York…

Regarding the dvds- I think it was kind of cool my dvds came in an old Hamburger Helper box. No more trees had to be cut down  in order to get my kids their silly videos.

I do have two final things to say about this though… if it was vintage jewelry shipped in a Hamburger Helper box- I would have gone ballistic. Other then that- there’s not much to say, except of course that there are much better flavors of Hamburger Helper then lasagna… I mean  who eats lasagna flavored Hamburger Helper- Garfield the Cat?

It’s not just eBay sellers either. There’s a company I buy products from since the pre-Internet days when they only had a catalog and no website yet (now they have both). Orders are always shipped in recycled boxes. Sometimes the fun is in seeing what kind of box it is!

I’ve never gotten a Hamburger Helper box though.

I am actually surprised the post office allowed that. I recycle mailing materials but real boxes and enevelopes. at least the dvds got there safely.

You know I was actually kind of surprised when it showed up myself- I thought one had to mark up all the writing on the outside. They have posters at our post office that direct people to magic marker off all the writing and pictures on the outside of their boxes, especially liquor and bottle boxes. Perhaps this Hamburger Helper box is special-maybe I should have the box bronzed… but I already threw it out after I clipped off the Box Top for Education 10 cents label.

I’m sorta having images of “vintage” hamburger helper in my mind now, and they’re just not pretty.

What is lasagna flavour hamburger helper? It sounds very wrong… and do you make burgers with it or lasagna? I don’t think we have any such delicacy over here…

Jenny- you don’t make either with it. What you do with it is, is fry up some crumbled up ground beef in a pan, then when it is cooked you pour in water, their packet of flavor, and then either their package of rice or pasta (usually pasta- but now they have a few flavors with rice). Then you let it simmer down and what you have is sauce, pasta, and ground beef. It’s generally a rip off- because you can do it yourself for cheaper add seasoning and mix with cooked pasta- same thing. Too there is not enough to feed a big family. I buy the Mexican style once in awhile when I can get on sale a dollar a box. Then I throw so much stuff on it and in it- that it does not even remotely resemble Hamburger Helper when I am done. They have tuna and chicken helper too. The tuna Helper sounds disgusting… I don’t like canned tuna as a hot dish. There you have it- that’s Hamburger Helper in a nut shell. It’s as American as apple pie!

That is cool! But doesn’t part of the shipping and hnadling charges that you paid include the packaging?

Well, there you go, that wasn’t what I expected at all! Why is it called hamburger helper if it has nothing to do with burgers though?

When I was a student, I lived with a girl from Milwaukie. Every time she went home, she brought us some kind of food that we don’t have over here to try; hamburger helper didn’t make it over though. And I was a bit disturbed by macaroni and cheese in a box!

That’s awesome! When I was younger and used to burn Kool-Aid, Hamburger Helper was a great thing. Then, I started reading labels and getting a few more skilz under my belt in the kitchen and I haven’t bought the stuff in YEARS! I’m surprised that it didn’t need to be wrapped in paper or something. Maybe the label made the difference.

    Have a great day!

I didn’t know they made Mr. Bean into a cartoon. I’ll have to check them out.

My wife once got a big box of books that were packaged with a huge amount of old newspaper. The cool thing about it was that the paper dated back to the 1990s (the new vintage). ;)

I’ll be so glad when this post moves to page 2. The page loading slows to a crawl when it hits those photos.
