Movies for those Suffering with Short Attention Spans

April 29, 2008

I read somewhere that people now have much shorter attention spans then previous generations. I would give you the website link for a citation- but I already forgot it.

Anyway- I don’t even have time to watch a full length movie anymore. Often when I do sit down to watch something; I can’t seem to just watch a movie anyway. I find that I have to lift weights at the same time, pedal on my exercise bike, do cross stitch, or even package items I am shipping on eBay. When I was a kid- I could camp out in front of the television and watch Saturday morning cartoon from 6:30 am to noon, without budging…

I blame computers for this phenomena- I click from site to site like a middle aged man wielding a television remote in charge of 250 or more channels. I am not even sure what I am looking for when I site hop~ only that it ends when I get tired or bored.

In an effort to help those suffering from short term attention spans, I feel I have created a two step program. These two steps include duct tape and movies.

One: pop in a dvd of a movie

Two: duct tape your self to the couch and watch

If you need help with making yourself prone to watch movies- I suggest you get assistance from another person and both of you and your duct tape wielding assistant watch A Clockwork Orange first.

If that doesn’t work- one could always watch shorter movies. To aid my readers with short attention spans- I have a 6 second video that encompasses all 10 Star Trek Movies, directed by Dan C. Rinnert. If you look closely you might notice Ricardo Montalblan as Khan in the 3rd second of the movie… ( watch it a couple times.) Dan’s movie is so cutting edge one will not even need to watch the new Star Trek movie to be released May 8th.

Enjoy and don’t forget to pop some popcorn!!!

Vintage Star Trek ~ My Kids Can’t Get Enough!

September 27, 2007

Space the Final FrontierI have a weakness for Barbie Dolls- although I don’t indulge it too much. Recently while listing on eBay- I snuck a peek at some of the Barbie Doll lots and snapped up a huge lot of 11 Barbie’s for the price of less then two Collector’s Edition Barbies (including shipping). One of the Barbie’s in this lot happens to be a 1996 Barbie and Ken Star Trek Gift Set. I can’t wait for the mail lady to arrive.

In the meantime- let’s talk Star Trek. This last July, while we were knee deep in HOT weather, my kids got a little restless. When I picked up some of our weekly free dvd picks from the library, I happened to snag some old school Star Trek. That is Star Trek with Captain Kirk, Spock, and Bones. I really didn’t think much of it, and frankly was a little surprised the original Star Trek was such a big hit here. It is a little technical and special effects lacking if you know what I mean.

However, my two oldest kids 14 and 12 took to it like video games and candy. In fact they checked out all the available dvds for the original Star Trek series. Not only that they then started checking out all of Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager, and even Enterprise (a show I had never seen).

Several things I want to point out about watching old Star Trek episodes, especially if you have had a long time between viewings as I have. Besides being highly entertaining, be prepared to have a lot of uncomfortable moments. For example, watching Spock sing a love song while he is under alien influence. Ewwww… The mini skirts and some of the girl alien costumes are teeny-tiny. I know people wear less nowadays and I have seen a million flossed butt cracks (poor fitting hipsters) walking down the street, but watching Uhura on the job having to pull down her uniform everytime she moves is weird. Other uncomfortable moments include any time Captain Kirk starts any form of love making with any thing that has a pulse. While Captain Picard oozes sex appeal and restraint, Captain Kirk just oozes. Don’t get me wrong I love Captain Kirk, he’s just a creepy, creepy man in some regards.

I am sure there is a lot of debate amongst Trekkies on which Star Trek is the best. I have to say with certainty for me the best is the first. Burned out on CGI and non-stop action, pop some popcorn and watch some vintage Star Trek.
