New to Vintage and Carnival Glass- stop here!
July 31, 2007
It’s amazing the vast variety of vintage items to be discovered. Take me for instance, I had no idea what Carnival glass was up until my first estate sale. After shopping the local estate sales, for vintage jewelry and books, the other thing that kept catching my eye was the vast array of beautiful old, vintage glassware pieces that were for sale.
While I choose not to buy and sell Carnival and other vintage glasses for the most part- on One of Kind Wisconsin, due to shipping concerns, I can’t help but feel left out sometimes. Carnival glass in particular has a bling bling quality that I can’t resist… Still don’t know what I am talking about, well then head over to this monster site.
In my opinion- David Doty’s Carnival Glass Website should be your first stop when learning about and researching Carnival Glass. It was there, I discovered some facts about the dazzling set of Carnival Glass that graces the top of my post. This set was graciously given to me by my mother-in-law this year, while helping her clean out their old farmhouse.
By using David Doty’s site I was quickly able to ID my new vintage treasure as a 7 piece Fenton (manufacturer’s name) Lattice and Grape Water Set. The values are given on David Doty’s site, but for me they are of no consequence in regards to this set. However, if you wish to purchase a set of Carnival glass for yourself, I suggest you carefully look over the values on this site and other resources, before making a purchase. As with all things, that have the ability to appreciate and be considered as an investment piece, Carnival Glass should be purchased both for enjoyment and yet at the same time carefully researched for values.
Another great resource for Carnival Glass is the recent edition of Warman’s Carnival Glass (2007). Warman’s publishes a wide variety of books and price guides on many vintage topics, from Carnival glass, and vintage jewelry, to Little Golden Books.

Doll Reunions- Have you been reunited with yours?
July 24, 2007
Something happens when you have kids, you are playing along with them, looking at their toys and suddenly you think, “whatever happened to my old Barbie doll?” Maybe it’s not Barbie that you are wistfully wishing for. It could be an old Holly Hobbie or Raggedy Ann doll, maybe it’s your old baby doll that you pine for, or even a stuffed bear or animal.
Even if you don’t have kids, there’s a point in a person’s life when they yearn to see those old childhood memento’s and favorite toys. Guys do it too, show a guy a picture of an old GI Joe and wait to see if the eyes glitter with glee or if he’s really enthusiastic, he might just shout, “I used to have him!”
I’ve been recently reunited with my childhood sweetheart… sure I had a Holly Hobbie doll, a Raggedy Ann too- I even had several different baby dolls, and a Miss Piggy doll (she was kind of creepy). However, none of these ladies held a candle to my Pink & Pretty Barbie from 1981. I had other Barbies before her, ones I held by the hair and swung around like weapons ready to thrash any boy that deserved it . Pink & Pretty, though was the first Barbie I really appreciated. At 9 years old I was finally into being a girl and this lovely doll came with an interchangeable wardrobe and serious bling!
I don’t know what happened to my original Barbie or when we parted ways. I hadn’t seen her or thought of her much- even though I occasionally buy adult collector’s Barbie’s on occasion for the last ten years. It just so happened that I saw Pink & Pretty again on eBay while browsing in the vintage Barbie category and I just knew I had to get her back. It’s been six months now since I won a mint, never removed from the box 1981 Pretty & Pink Barbie Doll. She’s now the star of my doll collection and every chance I get to look her over- I can’t resist taking her out of my display cabinet and combing her hair or changing her outfit.
Where’s your favorite doll at now- if you don’t know maybe it’s time for you to get reuinted… reunited ’cause it feels so good.
The allure of granny’s old jewelry; I’m in love with Vintage Bling!
July 23, 2007
I’ll admit it, the first time I saw vintage costume jewelry, I didn’t bat an eye. In fact, I probably thought it was old lady jewelry. After my Uncle Terry passed away in 2003, my Aunt cleaned through his house and gave me a lot of old memento’s from the family, including some of my Grandmother’s old costume jewelry. I took everything home, mainly grateful for all the wonderful family scraps and pictures I received. After all, I knew what to do with all those wonderful scraps; start family history scrapbooks.
It wasn’t until several months later- that I took a look at some of the costume jewelry. One piece in particular really stood out… it was a large all prong-set ruby, red rhinestone brooch. Holding it in my hand made me think of old Hollywood glamour. I imagined movie starlets like Jean Harlow or Rita Hayworth with big rhinestone brooches clipped to their fur stools, sweeping up the red carpet. Eyes full of determination and fiery rhinestone bling flashing under every furious explosion of light bulbs flashing…
Sounds dramatic, I know- but that’s love. When your in love you tend to idealize things. Maybe my vintage costume jewelry is really just granny jewelry. Or maybe it’s the most glamorous thing since Bogart & Bacall.
The crown jewel of my vintage jewelry collection- a gun metal grey rhinestone Maltese Cross. I purchased this in a little church thrift shop on Cape Cod this past December for ten dollars.
